All royal mummies in ancient Egypt were entombed in a lidded coffin called a sarcophagus. The sarcophagus was meant to protect the deceased in the afterlife, and more than one would often be used: one or more wooden sarcophagi adorned with gold and precious stones would be protected inside of large stone sarcophagi.
