This blue whale has been designed after the iconic model in the Milstein Family Hall of Ocean Life at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City.
The blue whale (Balaenoptera musculus) is a marine mammal belonging to the baleen whales (Mysticeti). At nearly 100 feet in length and 200 tons or more in weight, it is the largest mammal on earth (or in the water!) The blue whale is listed as an endangered animal. Their numbers are rebounding since the international whaling ban has been instituted, but their population is still endangered.
