Known as the Poet of Shadows, Ugo Mochi (1889 €“1977) was an Italian artist and sculptor renowned for his mastery of working in silhouette. Mochi €™s refined paper-cutting technique developed from a background in sketching as a young boy in Italy and formal training in sculpture, anatomy, and drawing at the Florence Academy of Fine Arts. His intricate silhouettes earned him worldwide recognition, and his works can be found in esteemed art collections around the globe.

In 1969, Mochi produced fourteen panels for the American Museum of Natural History in New York. Standing eight feet tall and two feet wide, the panels were each cut from a single piece of paper and depict a variety of scenes from the natural world. The images on these notecards are derived from four of these panels and have been reproduced from the Digital Special Collections of the American Museum of Natural History Research Library.
