Often ill as a child, Roosevelt studied natural history at home, learned taxidermy, and started his own collection. At age 12, he donated some of them - a dozen mice,a bat, a turtle, four birds' eggs, and the skull of a red squirrel - to the Museum. He collected and mounted a snowy owl in 1876, the same year he entered Harvard planning to become a naturalist, and gave it to the Museum in 1911. In the Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Hall at the American Museum of Natural History you can take a seat next to a full size statue of Theodore Roosevelt sporting the rugged clothes he wore in Yosemite National Park two years into his presidency.
